Read & Reflect

What is causing the quarrels and fights among you? Don’t they come from the evil desires at war within you? You want what you don’t have, so you scheme and kill to get it. You are jealous of what others have, but you can’t get it, so you fight and wage war to take it away from them. Yet you don’t have what you want because you don’t ask God for it.

James 4:1-2 (NLT)

How does the scripture apply to your marriage? Reflect on this when you and your spouse come together for prayer.

Pray Together

What is causing the quarrels and fights among us, Lord? I mean, what is at the root, the core, of our battles? What is our unmet need that we want so badly but aren't getting from the other, or vice versa? And why haven't we asked you?

We don't ask you to show us what is 'wrong' with our spouse. No, we ask you to show us what is wrong with us individually. Where are we empty and jealous and craving and angry...and most important...why?

Let us come to you first for fulfillment and only then, together as a couple, let us come for healing from our quarreling. Amen.

Have fun with the following conversation starters from the book, Creative Conversation Starters for Couples, written by Robert and Pamela Crosby and published by Honor Books.

  • If you could store up only one hour’s worth of memory in your mind, which hour of our marriage would you want to remember?

  • If you could have witnessed any biblical event, which one would you choose?

  • When do you feel most loved?

  • Which strengths in your life bring you the greatest satisfaction?

  • What is the best way for me to encourage you?

  • If we could just drop what we’re doing and go do something fun, what would it be?
